I currently have two Saddlebacks, one acquired about a month prior to the other, both from ORA.  The first fish I added to the tank has slowly developed dark-ish blotches on the body, as if it's gradually switching colors.  The body is predominatly reddish/orange but these dark areas are slowly increasing.  I know that there are different variants with some having the red/orange and others being black.  Any idea if there are color changes during the maturation process with this species?

Thanks,

J

Do you have an anemone in the tank ?
If so, some times the Clown fish will try to host the anemone and
gets stung leaving black marks. This does not hurt the clown, but over time
the anemone and the clown will get used to each other, and the stinging will stop.

Hey JG--
just getting back into town. Color changing clownfish-eh.

As you mention there are variants (color morphs) that infact do darken w/ age, but let me ask a few questions.
Do you notice this darkening during the day and a reduction at night? many fish have diurnal color changes
Next any new tankmates or a move or harassment. Darkening can frequent mean stress
Next, any new clownfish hosts (anemones, etc) --as mentioned new host frequently sting the clowns until they build a tolerance

I guess i wouldn't worry about it unless you paid high dollar for a solid orange saddleback that you want to remain pristine, all the saddle back ive seen get darkened caudual peduncles. Lastly, i've also seen common names for these fish called brown saddleback, black saddlebacks, so there are clearly varying color morphs

as far as I'm aware, ORA only produce the brown variant. They are working on the black ones but not in production.
