It is also an ingredient in Ocean Nutrition products (although not listed in the ingredients)

I wonder why they would not include it in the list of ingredients?

To me, that might help sales.

My bottle F2 flake has a sticker on it that says "Now with Beta-Glucan." I think the item on the ingredient list that applies is "vitamin premix."

Thanks Nicole.

Sounds like some of the companies are recognizing the potential benefits of beta glucan and are trying to capture the market.

I read all labels and when a product does not list its ingredients or does so with generic terms "vitamins", "appetite stimulant",  "meat by products", etc.  I will not buy them.  Call me paranoid, but I want to know what I am using on my animals, fish and myself.

I didn't mean to insinuate they didn't spell it out. The actual text of the portion of the ingredient list in F2 flake is:
vitamin premix (ascorbic acid, stabilized vitamin C, dl-alpha tocopheryl acetate, d-pantothenic acid, riboflavin, niacin, menadione, folacin, cholecalciferol, biotin, thiamin, retinol, pyridoxine, and cyanocobalamin)

Nicole,

That's okay.

There are plenty of products available to the hobbyists that do not spell the ingredients out.  This is a good place to point these things out so hobbyists can be better informed.

Thanks.

I emailed them about that and was told they were in the process of "reformulation" and label changes. It was my guess they were just finnishing off old labels. They also indicated they had not established a level for the Beta glucan. Will post a copy later when I get home.

Cheers

Thanks for the info, Steve.

I wonder if treating lymphocystis might be an area where beta glucan could really help?

Steve,

Thanks for the information. Please do post an update.

When you say "they didn't have a level" - does that mean, they don't know what the recommended dosage or they don't know how much (mg) is in a certain amount of food (gm) ?

Just curious.
Thanks again.

Nicole,

I have seen beta glucan given to fish with progressing lymphocystis, start healing quickly. A recent case of lymphocystis that responded to beta glucan was Anthony Calfo's giant hawk fish.

The mechanism of how beta glucan works, is that it increases the production of macrophages (white blood cells that attact pathogens). With that mode of action, it stands to reason that the beta glucan would help to trigger/increase/boost the fish's own immune system to attact the viral cells (lymphocystis).

I would recommend it to anyone as it is merely a derivitive of yeast - so what harm could be caused.

It is definitely worth a try and I have been using it myself for the last 2 years.

Thanks for the input Nicole.
