I clean my tank glass every day but I've plenty of purple dots all over my glass.

Well, there is some cleanup effort in post processing the images. A car salesman will wash a car before letting people see it because no one is interested in a dirty/messy car. Likewise, a photo needs to be tweaked and adjusted before you can see through the muck at the true subject.

There's some lessons here on taking photos and processing them.

RE: My Tank

WOW! I've got to take a pic of it one of these days, but... Well... I've been lazy She's had it for about a year now

Here's a quick snapshot of it with my daughter. The photo sucks, but oh well. I can't think of what that number would correlate with. I love my pinpoint pHmonitor, and was thinking about ordering the Ca2+ monitor. I've heard mixed reviews though. Thanks!

Phototip of the day: clean your tank before you take a photo of it to show the entire world

My house is a disaster at the moment too, and we have no kitchen to boot, as there's a leak and they had to tear apart half the kitchen to take care of some mold they found

Anyways, yup, that's a Salinity monitor. I think the issue with the Ca2+ monitor is that it gets encrusted or something (not sure). But for me they're just monitors, I take actual measurements weekly. This just helps me see if there's a problem at a quick glance (i.e., a big change from the last time I fed the fish or something). I wouldn't trust it to actually control the salinity in my tank.

My maintenence is pretty simple: Strict Berlin, with weekly 5g water changes, skimmer and NO other mechanical filtration, and no additives, dosing, etc. (I'm too lazy with two kids to chase after).

RE: My Tank

Puffer Queen (9/14/2006)
How long has the tank been set up?

Sorry for the late reply. The tank's been up for several years, but I had to tear it down and rebuild it a couple of times.

It actually started out about 5 years ago as a FOWLR tank (10g) with Nemo and some other fish (before the movie), when my daughter was an infnant. The movie came out, she recognized her fish, and now she's crazy about Nemo.

Anyways, I was looking at the space where the tank was sitting, and said told my wife that it would look perfect as a built in tank, all I had to do was knock out a few shelves and reinforce the bottom. She told me I was insane. Well.... One day while she was at work and my infant daughter was napping, I took a hammer to those shelves and knocked them out, knocked out the side wall. I was originally going to stick a custom tank there, but after measuring it, I figured out that a 29 would fit perfect. So I got a 29, painted the back and pieced it all together. Took me about 3 months to get everything up, as there were other renovations and projects in the house going on at the time.

It was up for about 3 years and I had an algae bloom that I was fighting like mad. Finally decided to tear down the tank (didn't like the aquascaping and some of the corals anyways). got it reconfigured like pictured above. Had to tear it down last month as the tank sprung a leak and I had to replace it.

Here's the original tank after I put it together and got a few corals from the LFS (2004.02.02):

Here's what it looked like just before I tore it down the first time (actually the big birdsnest in the photo right was the size of a basketball and sticking out at the top of the water and touching the glass in the front.

RE: My Tank

Matt,

It is a salinity monitor.

RE: My Tank

Awesome pics!
