I have been dripping eco kalkwasser in my 75 gallon tank, using 1 300 g pouch per gallon of ro water. After it mixes and then settles, I use the clear liquid remaining. The other kalkwasser mixes use only 2 tablespoons per gallon. What is the difference between these brands and eco? I would like to buy the cheaper brands, but only if the quality is the same. Thank you.

Hi Robo's Tank,

Welcome to the Marine Depot Forums.

I have always used the Kent Kalkwasser (or even the Seachem's) and have been very happy with it so IMO I don't think you will have any issue switching to one of the other brands.

HTH,

Kalk is a very simple molecule, just calcium hydroxide, CaOH. so as long as it's purity is good it is ok.

many people also use Mrs Wages pickling Lime. i bought a 50-60 pound bag of caoh at a chemical supply house.

Kalkwasser (or Calcium Hydrioxide Ca(OH)2 ) is pretty good at self purification.  The exceptionally high pH of the mix once in water makes metals and other elements precipitate as its hydroxide. (Hydroxide is a fancy term for the -OH ending).

300g is alot of Ca(OH)2   to add to a small ammount of water.  I would add about 15 grams to a gallon of water and use that powder for a total of 3 gallons of water then clean it out.

Generally one brand is going to be exceptionally similar to the next.  Mrs. Wages is a great choice,  as is Kent Brand.

Yeah I tried the pickled lime and notice my ph didn't stay as high as with Kent Marine's product. But something that is really weird about the direction of mixing the kalk is just the opposite when using a actual kalk reactor, hmmm and still works fine. I've heard of people just using a couple of tablespoons into a 8oz. glass of RO/DI water and pouring it straight into their fuge/sump. I would assume that would spike the ph to quick. So I just like the Aquamedic doser before the kalk reactor and the drip of 5 minutes every four hours in a 24 hr period.

See ya
